Teen Volunteers
If you’re a teenager interested in volunteer service at a GCLS Branch, become a Volunteen! Volunteering is a great way for teenagers to find ongoing volunteer opportunities both during the school year and during the summer months.
Requirements
- 12 to 17 years of age
- Minimum 10 hour commitment
- Regular schedule is required for many positions
- Volunteer hours are assigned after interview
The Process
- Complete a teen volunteer application. Applications are available at the
- Circulation Desk at your local branch library.
- Return the completed application to the library.
- The library where you wish to volunteer will contact you to schedule training
- Complete new volunteer training. Training is offered at various times.

Occupational Outlook Handbook
Researched by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, easily look at a variety of jobs, what kind of degree is needed, and the median pay for each. You can also browse categories such as ‘highest paying’ or ‘fastest growing (projected)’ field.
National Career Development Association resources page –
The NCDA has compiled a list of resources to aid in all aspects of job searching. The first category, ‘self assessment’, provides several sites where you can take self assessments to find what career paths may be best for you.
Youth.gov career exploration and skill development page –
This is a government website that includes resources for young adults to find careers they are interested in, learn about job searching, finding internships, and more.
Money
Khan Academy is a great free resource to learn lots of different topics, from math to arts and humanities to coding. Under their ‘life skills’ heading, you can find a course dedicated to personal finance.
NerdWallet is free and you don’t even need to log in to access their guides. They’ve got lots of useful guides on saving and checking accounts, stock investing and money management.
If you’re looking for a video-based guide, check out the Financial Diet, which is a YouTube channel specifically for young adults looking to learn about finances.

100 Books Before Graduation
What is it?
This challenge is for tweens and teens ages 11-17. Read and/or listen to 100 books between your 11th birthday and when you graduate high school to win!
How does it work?
- Visit any GCLS branch after that date to pick up a free notebook and pen to get started.
- Use this notebook to log the books that you complete.
- For every 25 books you finish, you can come into the library to share your favorites and claim a small prize.
- When you’ve finished 100 books, you win a grand prize!
Information and Resources
988 is now the three-digit dialing code that routes callers to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (or 988 Lifeline). On July 16, 2022, the Lifeline transitioned away from the National Suicide Prevention Line reached through a 10-digit number to the three-digit 988 Lifeline.
The previous 988 Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis.
Mentoring and Support Groups
- PRIDE Center
If you want some advice or guidance from an adult whose journey may be similar to yours, the NJ PRIDE center offers mentorship opportunities. Get paired with a trained mentor and work together to meet your goals. - Kaleidoscope
Sometimes you just need to talk to someone going through the same thing you are. Kaleidoscope offers in-person and virtual monthly meetings for youth and young adults throughout New Jersey. The group’s goal is to empower LGBTQIA+ teens (and allies) to lead healthy, productive lives. - HiTOPS
HiTOPS is a nonprofit organization that provides inclusive and youth-informed LGBTQ support for young people throughout New Jersey. Health services and group support resources are available for people ages 13 – 26. HiTOPS developed two support groups called First & Third and PFLAG for LGBTQ youth and their loved ones.
Healthcare
- Project WOW Youth Center
For young people ages 14-24, Project WOW is a safe space to build community, gain leadership skills and access relevant sexual health, mental health, and substance use services. They offer free rapid HIV testing, one-on-one counseling, safe sex kits, and more. - National Alliance on Mental Illness

The nonprofit Garden State Equality compiled a healthcare directory of doctors and providers who identified themselves as LQBTQIA-friendly. Garden State Equality also provides inclusivity training and resources to schools. - North Jersey Community Research Initiative
NJCI offers primary care, infectious disease care and gender affirmative hormonal treatment, as well as HIV treatment and prevention. They view healthcare holistically and include mental health, substance use treatment, and case management services, too.
Hotlines
- 2NDFLOOR Youth Helpline
This 24/7 helpline serves all NJ youth and young adults in New Jersey. Youth who call are assisted with their daily life challenges by professional staff and trained volunteers. Anonymity and confidentiality are assured except in life-threatening situations. Call or text 1-888-222-2228. - Teen Line
Teen Line is a confidential hotline for teenagers which operates every evening from 6:00pm to 10:00pm PST. If you have a problem or just want to talk with another teen who understands, then this is the right place for you! You can call us at 800-TLC-TEEN (852-8336), text us by texting “TEEN” to 839863 - NJ Hopeline
The Hopeline is New Jersey’s peer support and suicide prevention hotline. It is staffed by mental health professionals and peer support specialists 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service is available to all ages for confidential telephone support (except when a suicide attempt is in progress), assessment, and referral. - The Trevor Project
The Trevor Project’s goal is to prevent LGBTQIA+ youth suicides. It offers a 24/7 hotline that you can text at 678-678 or call at 1-866-488-7386. It also has online support groups. - NJ PRISM
The PRISM hotline operates 24/7 and provides information and referrals to the LGBTQIA+ community. It can help connect you to services and programs in New Jersey that you may be eligible for. Call 844-657-7476.
Housing
- Covenant House
For youth between the ages of 18 to 21 facing homelessness, Covenant House provides residential and supportive services. There are also programs for young, first-time mothers. - Mary’s Place
Located in Mercer County, Mary’s Place is a LGBTQIA+ affirming safe housing program for young people, ages 18-21. In addition to the supervised living conditions, staff can help you connect to mental and physical health care, financial education, employment preparation, and more. - Together (Shelter)
Together is a 24-hour emergency shelter for kids ages 9-18, who need a safe place to stay. It is a walk-in shelter, meaning you’ll get help as soon as you enter its doors. In addition to food, clothing, and medical services, staff can connect you with counseling, educational services, and recreational activities. It is LGBTQIA+ affirming. - RAIN Foundation
Located in Essex County, Reaching Adolescents In Need (RAIN) Foundation is a non-profit that provides emergency shelter for LGBTQIA+ individuals, ages 18 to 26, who are experiencing crisis leading to homelessness.
